One Day

Christmas - "a lot of fuss for just one day." We may have heard this phrase from the lips of frustrated shoppers standing in line in a crowded store. When the "one day" is isolated from its true, pure and potent meaning, then perhaps this deduction has a certain ring of truth.

Let us pause for a moment in the whirl of activity that carries us onward and think about that "one day" and its far-reaching significance. On the day in history that was that "one day", Jesus Christ was born. In his birth was the fulfillment of a divine promise made long ago, "Behold a virgin shall be with child, and she shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."

While the birth of Jesus Christ is an historical fact; what his birth signified for mankind is a spiritual as well as historical truth. Temporal man had a problem that needed an eternal solution. He was a sinner, alienated from a holy God, his Maker. No reconciliation was possible and man was destitute of hope. But what a glorious difference "one day" was about to make. In a roughly hewn manger, suited for the lowly creatures of earth, a Babe, newly-born but yet eternal, was laid. Embodied in that one small bundle of humanity was God Almighty, choosing to be born into a world that was incapable of fellowshipping with him because of the separating chasm of sin dug by man's own hand.

Because of that "one day", the day of his birth, he would grow up, experiencing in true human form the world of his making. From some he received recognition and reception but from the many, rejection and refusal of the arms outstretched in love and mercy.

The cumulation of his earthly days found their sum and purpose in the cross on which he bore the punishment for the sin that formed the barrier between creature and Creator. When he cried out, "It is finished", the entrance to God's presence and heaven was flung wide open to the whosoever would enter in, solely on His merit alone. The life that began that "one day" in an humble stable was willingly given up one day on a sacrificial cross, forever changing the sad and desperate state of a world without hope. His unique mission on earth took him from helpless Babe in the manger to triumphant, resurrected Lord.

So much is bound up in that "one day" that no celebration on earth could ever even faintly mirror the jubilation afforded that "one day" in heaven, the homeland of our Lord. If hearts were only tuned to that heavenly chorus, sung that first Christmas night so long ago,then truly "the weary world would rejoice." "For unto you is born this day...a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:11
