Appearance

"And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as ye see me have." Luke 24:36-39

Here were the disciples discussing the Lord Jesus' appearance to the Emmaus twosome. They were still trying to factor this information into their thinking when Jesus himself stood in their midst. They, in terror, considered him to be a spirit, without tangibility and substance. Sensing their fear, Jesus made the stilling of their hearts a priority.
He questioned, "why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?" He knew that the thoughts that arise in our hearts are not often to be trusted but may often have their root in error and mis-interpretation. Only the words of Jesus Christ can be relied upon to reveal him correctly. He brought them back to the reality from which they were fleeing as they met together after the cross. "Behold my hands and my feet that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have."
