THE END IS COMING

There are many evangelical preachers who, almost every week, announce with conviction that the end of the world is near. God, they are convinced, cannot tolerate the sinfulness of human beings. The Anti-Christ is in open rebellion. The scriptures are unclear about the timing of the second coming of Jesus and we have only hints such as: “like a thief in the night” or “without warning”. Prior to the Second Coming, the Anti-Christ will sit in the temple of God. But God promises to judge this earth and come again. He will separate people, raise the dead, and establish the reign of God. There is one certainty. We know that this world will end and be replaced with another.

Prophecies of the end of the world do not help us very much in defending against antichrists, atheists, materialists, and evolutionists, as examples. The date of the end of the world is in the hands, mind, and control of God. We can pray about it; we can prophesy, we can try various calculations, but the timing remains with God.

There is another level of destruction and change which is more in man’s control. History records the end of civilizations, kingdoms, countries, and dynasties. The ends of earthly kingdoms are directly determined by human beings. Some of us have seen the end of the Communist rule in Russia; the demise of the British Empire, and the end of various nation states. People of faith can seek to explain these endings as the work of God. We can believe that God has destroyed these rulers because he dislikes dictators, kings, socialists, or communists. Historians, however, offer more secular reasons.

History records the demise of nations. Most nations are destroyed from within. Rarely do countries fall because they are conquered without collusion from people inside the conquered country. The great nation of Genghis Khan was destroyed by his own sons. The British Empire was destroyed by the British nobility and citizens who did not want to pay the costs of providing for unwilling subjects and the burdens of leadership. The Roman Empire fell because of its lack of personal discipline, an influx of illegal subjects who took rather than sought to give, and the rejection of the Roman moral, legal and ethical codes.

Historians point to several characteristics leading to a downfall of nations and civilizations.

1. Great kingdoms are destroyed not by enemies on the outside, but from enemies within the country. . The fall of Rome was aided by the work of Brutus and others who killed Julius Caesar who had become an intolerable leader. The Egyptian dynasty was destroyed by treachery. Rebellions and violent anti-government opposition often usher in periods of anarchy, civil disorder, and rejection of moral values. Some countries like France and Russia never overcome their violent pasts. Countries are destroyed when the majority has no determination and commitment to values, and the minority is noted for their ignorance and persistence.

2. Government leaders lack moral character and refuse to deal with evil people and treachery. Politics defeats reason as the method of decision making; moral and political ideals are sacrificed. Rome placated immigrants, and tried to buy them off with free meals, social services, and support.

3. Both the people and government refuse to accept the reality, power, and creativity of their enemies. People lose the capacity of critical thinking. They forsake traditional values, and adopt myths in place of reality. It is amazing to me that people can report on the incidents of 9-11 without saying Muslim. Much of the media view 9-11 as the activities of a few crazy people and not part of a larger hatred of America. There is a fringe group who attribute the 9-11 incidents as the work of certain American politicians. Twenty percent of Canadians and fifty per cent of all Muslims in Britain believe that Bush, Cheney and others staged the 9-11 incidents to gain access to oil.

4. The country begins to lack confidence in its heritage, values, systems of government, and culture. The absolutists refuse to adapt their values to present reality, while others reject them altogether. Free speech, for example, is a foundational characteristic of democratic society, but it was never designed to accommodate the preaching of rebellion and opposition to authority and central power. Illegal acts are permitted because it is too much trouble to punish all of those people. Drug dealing, sexual slavery, lack of respect for American law and refusal to obey lawful authority have created lawless sections of America. The streets of Los Angeles are controlled by Mexican and scofflaw gangs. The rule of law in most cities like Denver and Houston is a laughable joke. In effect, certain sections of some cities are sanctuaries for criminals.

5. The country is ruled by a tolerance, which in terms of morality means license; and in terms of behavior means anything goes. The Pope is vilified in fake outrage in many Muslim countries. In the federal government, anything proposed by the Republicans is opposed by the Democrats. The Republicans on the other hand are so obsessed with their own agenda that everything else slides. Canada emphasizes diversity so that anyone who opposes bad behavior, immorality, or criminality is automatically defined as a bigot, hate monger, sexist; or a prejudiced person. The Southern Border is left unprotected to permit the influx of cheap labor, leftist leaning potential citizens, and people who will change traditional American values.

The nations of the Western world are permitting their own destruction. Do we have to wait for a new announcement of a Crusade as the Pope did in 1095? Do we need to wait for another incident of the magnitude of Pearl Harbor because the Trade Center attack was not large enough? Do we need to stand at the edge of defeat as in l942 before we seriously go to war? I do not believe that Western nations, the Christian churches with their pride in diversity, and the lack of moral and upright leaders, will be able to, or want to, withstand the onslaughts and betrayals from within. Unless there is a reversal of attitudes, an acceptance of the danger, and a willingness to pay the price, I believe that the Western nations, including the United States will fall.

But is there hope? Are we destined to ride the slide of national suicide to its bitter and grisly end? Where do we find people with the courage to say the emperor has no clothes, or the waiting and watching are fruitless? There are some signs of light. Maybe in the strangeness of history God will use the Chinese and their hatred of God and religion to destroy the march of Islam to the East. China has remained immunized to the influence of Islam. Maybe it will be a mandate given to the Indian sub-continent to fight and destroy Islam in the name of freedom for Buddhism, Hinduism, and atheism. Maybe the universities in the United States will reject Karl Marx, and return to reason and rationality rather than mythology. Maybe the political mess in the U.S.A. will begin to smell so bad that people of reason and faith will cry “enough” and we will have a rebellion against stupidity, evil, and treachery. Maybe our politicians will take seriously the war with Islam as a war against barbarism and slavery.

People of different persuasions, faith, training, and experience have complained of the root causes: illegal immigration, rejection of the Constitution, inability to deal with terrorism and to take seriously the threat to Western civilization, the loss of entrepreneurship and its replacement by reliance upon government, as examples. Writers and prophets have pointed to different aspects of the symptoms of decline. This is the time of the trying of souls. It is time for the Christian Churches and their people to renew their commitments to principles, ideals, and faith. God has spared his people only when they have turned to him in faith. We cannot count upon negotiations, agreements, and associations with other countries to substitute for Christian faith. Those who demand that we give in and bargain with our enemies are offering bad advice. Our only salvation is in a God who still controls the world and its destiny. The time is short; I predict only twenty years, or four presidential election cycles. The end is surely coming, and unless we rid ourselves of those who betray the country from within we shall surely perish.
