MOSES IN THE RUSHES…POEM

Exodus 1,2

In Egypt, after Joseph died
The new king got concerned;
“In case our enemies attack
We could get badly burned”

“You see, the Israelites we have
Are quite a population
The problem is, we don’t know if
They’re loyal to our nation”

“I think we’d better find a way
To bring them under heel;
We’ll make them work with bricks and clay
Firm discipline they’ll feel”

So all the Israelites were made
To work with pain and rigor
But with God’s help they multiplied
The group got even bigger

“Now Hebrew midwives,” Pharaoh said
“Here’s what you need to know
Kill all the sons as they are born
But let the daughters go”

Shiphrah and Puah worshipped God
They would not do this thing;
They saved the sons and daughters too
And disobeyed the king

When Pharaoh called them both to task
The alibi they made
Was Hebrew women don’t need us
They give birth without aid

So Pharaoh he got really mad
His face was full of bile;
Find every child that is a boy
And throw him in the Nile

A Levite woman had a child
He was a boy, quite fair;
Three months she kept him hidden;
More she could not dare

She made for him a little boat
Daubed with slime and pitch
Installed the child and let it go
Along the river ditch

The sister of the little child
Concealed behind a tree;
Kept watching by the river bank
To see what she could see

Well, Pharaoh’s daughter came to wash
Along the river’s edge;
She spied the ark, she sent her maid
To bring it from the sedge

“Why here’s a little Hebrew boy
I cannot let him die”
When hidden sister heard these words
She quickly came close by

“I could find a Hebrew nurse
To raise the little lad”
“Why yes” so sister brought her mom
Who raised the little tad

When grown they took him to the house
Of that same Pharaoh’s daughter;
She called him Moses just because
She found him in the water

This self same Moses you will know
Was guided by God’s hand
To free His people, lead them out
To the Promised Land
