My dad had an old pickup truck that he had used in his contracting business. Then my older brother Dwight got to drive it. It ran pretty well. One day 8, 9 neighborhood teenagers and younger boys decided to go to East Eliot and on to Kittery, and hopefully to our favorite spot, the Dairy Queen.
In order to conserve gasoline, we went on a 'short cut' along a dirt road starting behind our house, passing through a gravel pit, and then continuing on until we would finally meet another paved road. The unspoken agreement on traveling on the dirt road was that when we came to a gate we could open it and go through. But we had to remember to close it too. Or, cows everywhere!
After making it through the gravel pit, the unanticipated thing happened. We ran out of gas! NO FUEL. NO GO. We decided to push the pickup truck. Being quite a few of us, that seemed to work until we came to a hill. Then our plan was thwarted. NO FUEL. NO GO. NO MOVEMENT. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. The truck sat still.
One of the group had to walk on ahead and see if he could borrow some fuel. Most of us just walked on back home.
Can you see a picture of the Christian life here? NO FUEL. NO GO. NO MOVEMENT. No word of God (no message), no hearing (no personal absorption), no movement forward in faith. The Apostle Paul said, "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the WORD of Christ." Rom. 10:17. Let's put it in the consequential order: message (WORD of Christ) ----->hearing (absorption) ----->faith (movement forward in the Christian life).
"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the POWER OF GOD."
1 Cor. 1:18. "And we also thank God continually because, when you received the WORD OF GOD, which you HEARD from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the WORD OF GOD, which is at work in you who believe." 1 Thess. 2:13. "I have hidden your WORD in my heart that I might not sin against you." Psalm 119:11. Now capture the sequence: Word...Hearing...Faith. May our faith be daily increased as the blessings of God cascade upon us.
