“Higher Ground Two”

Once upon a time or so the story goes, a commander was called to a secret meeting with the high general. “Tomorrow we will launch a major offense in and around your area. We also expect the enemy to run an operation at the same time. With luck, our forces will be in place to counterattack and save the day. Make sure your people are alert for allied and enemy movements along your position,” the general order.

Upon returning to his lines, the commander informed the major. The major informed the captain. The captain called his best sergeant. “I am placing you in charge of surveillance of the area. There can be both allied and enemy troop movements in the morning, so keep me informed,” he commanded. The sergeant then called for a trustworthy private and ordered, “Get you a good pair of binoculars and scan the battlefield for any signs of movement.”

Early the next morning as fog shrouded the area the private was in place. “What do you see?” called the sergeant. “I see nothing, but I hear something in the far distance,” came the private’s reply.

“Well, climb to higher ground,” returned the sergeant.

Moving to the top of a bunker high above the trench line, the private began again to spy for movement. “What do you see?” questioned the sergeant. “I see nothing, but faint shadows in the distance” shouted the private.
“Then climb to higher ground,” commanded the sergeant.

Not too far away were the remains of an old oak tree, so the private ran to climb it. Half way up the tree came the call, “What do you see?”

“I can see the movement quite well, but I can’t make out who it is.”

“Climb to higher ground” was the reply. Immediately, the private scrambled to the top most branch and searched the battlefield. “I see them! I see them!” the private reported. “What do you see?” questioned the sergeant. “I see troops heading our way, but don’t shoot they are our allies!” the private reported happily.

COMMON SENSE SAYS: In order for us to see we must be willing to learn all that we can. Climb to higher ground is our called to know God by learning of his word.
