"Higher Ground One”

Once upon a time or so the story goes, the was a young man who lived alone with his father and an older brother on a small farm on the edge of a small village. One day the older brother said, “I have heard of strange wonders and sights unseen just over the far hill. I think I will go off and see.”

"Why leave my brother? There is nothing better than what we have here today? Look around you. Have you seen anything more beautiful than this farm, this village and our family?” the young man questioned.

“I know, but I just have to go and see for myself,” the older brother said determinedly. With that he was off climbing his way out of the valley and over the far hill.

Several years passed before the older brother retuned with exciting tales and visions of wonders. “Brother, brother come and see! There is a world out there waiting on you.”
“I can’t believe that there is anything better than what I have here today,” the young man replied doubting the words of his older brother. “There is nothing more beautiful than this farm, this village, and our family.” He stubbornly demanded.

"Brother, you live in a pig sty, ugly and all uncomfortable.”

“Liar!” he shouted. “You take that back or leave this beautiful place for ever!”

“See for yourself brother, if there isn’t a world out there that is wonderful to behold,” the older brother prodded. “No, I won’t!” came the reply. With that, the older brother threw up his shoulders in despair and headed once again, out and over the far hill.

Later, in the silence of the night, the young man heard strange noises waffling in with the wind. Curious, he set out with a sack lunch and a trustily rod to climb the mountain just on the other side of the farm. Up and up, he climbed all the time with one eye on his beautiful farm and one eye on the horizon. Onward and upward, he climbed reaching even higher ground until the farm was but a speck to the eye and the village even smaller. Looking out, he could see large villages and cities come into view. There were lights, and signs, and wonders all about just on the other side of the far hill. Despair fell on his heart as he realized that his farm was just a pig sty compared to what laid just on the other side of the hill.

COMMON SENSE SAYS: Often we are not where God wants us to be, but we have gotten use to the scenery. In order to understand His love, we must climb to higher ground.
