Salvation Or Damnation?

Stephen A. Peterson

Brittany, a perky 14 year old, took the bus to school everyday. She was a student at Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. While riding the bus, Brittany would read a couple of passages of from her Bible to pass the time.

On a cold November morning, Norma, an atheist, saw Brittany take her Bible of her backpack. Norma smiled then continued to leaf through stories in the Indianapolis Star, the city’s daily newspaper. Realizing Brittany was probably a Christian, Norma thought to herself that she would have some fun with this teenage girl.

“Say young lady this is the year 2004. Are you going to tell me that you’re a Christian?”

“Yep, I sure am!!” Brittany replied enthusiastically.

“What’s that you’re readin’?”

“Oh, it’s the Bible ma’am.”

“You look like you’re a real intelligent girl. Are you going to tell me you believe everything you read about in that thing?”

“Yes, I do it’s the Bible—the Word of God.”

“You mean even that story about some fish eating a man?”

“Ah, yes. You mean Jonah? Sure! Yes, I believe it.”

“Really! Now can you explain how he made it inside of a fish for so long?”

“Well, no I can’t. Maybe I’ll find out from him or the Lord when I get to heaven.”

“But what if he isn’t in heaven? How are you going to know?” Norma asked Brittany in a sarcastic manner as she mocked her belief in God.”

“Well,” responded Brittany. “I guess you can ask him yourself!!!!””

Norma was silenced.
