Lessons From A 5 Year Old

It was the 2020 Fall meeting of the American Academy of Sciences. In attendance were the brightest most competent of intellectuals anywhere in the world. During one of their many meetings and seminars, one among their colleagues posed to a group of 144 members this question, “What does love mean?”

After a brief moment of silence and reflection, a member stood up and identified himself as being a philosopher then boldly stated, “Love does not exist. The word and concept of love is just a four letter word designed to subjugate and enslave humankind. The world must be free of the word and concept of ‘love’ if it is to survive. Silence fell over the assembly of intellectuals.

“I agree somewhat,” responded a woman who identified herself to be a biology professor from a prestigious British university. “love is a male trick designed to enslave women and make them unwillingly reproduce humankind. It evolved as a process and is an opiate of the female gender.”

A physicist stood up, “Love is but it is relative. It depends upon age, race, national origins, socio-economic status, psychological stability, political belief and calorie intake. What is love to one person may not be love to another person. Right?”

A chemist still seated raised her voice, “Love does not exist. It’s just a chemical reaction humans have in response to elements in the environment where they live. So-called love is a behavioral response to C2H5 OH. Come one! Any chemist with any standing knows that’s all so-called love is!”

Juanita, a 5 year old daughter of a Costa Rican hotel waitress was present because her mother could not afford to put her in children care center responded, “God is love. Because Jesus Christ is God who came down from heaven, lived among people and died who came down from heaven, lived among people and died for everybody. He even loved those who didn’t love Him back. He loved those people who killed Him, too! That’s love everybody knows that!!!”

Little Juanita left the conference room with all the professional intellects stunned and speechless. That this child of a poor, uneducated woman could explain in simple terms what the most intelligent could not. Makes one wonder!
