Grief
Thy Hand
In a complete darkness
I saw a hand reaching towards me
Unknowingly catching hold of it
I felt warmth & comfort it offered to me
It wiped away my tears – & caressed me
It sheltered me from storm – & introduced love to me
It made me play – & it scolded me
But still at sunset it holded me.
Night ‘n’ day & still after weeks
Months ‘n’ years it molded me.
Loneliness I left now far behind
The only mate I found – was thy hand
Suddenly collapsed the heap of dreams
I saw my tears flowing like streams;
Nothing to trace, no way to lead
No thoughts – how I could reach my dreams.
The hand left me – with no reason to think
Thou did not notice – my heart could sink.
I gave thee my voice & felt unheard
I searched for thy sight & felt unsearched
In silence I stood & waited thee to speak
In silence I heard there was nothing thee could speak.
Thou shall not return, now I know
I shall pray for thy joy, wherever thee go…
I thought the world has ended for me
God offered His hand – I am here for thee
He is my joy, now He is my hope
To reach out to thee – there is no scope
But I thank thee – you gave me such a pain
It was only then – God heard my claim
No matter how far you stay from me
In God’s kingdom – I shall wait for thee…
Only,
Joy

“Thy Hand”, the good: how you personified God as ‘Hand’ especially in these lines, ‘warmth & comfort it offered…’; ‘caressed me’; ‘introduced love to me’; ‘…it molded me.’ The whole subject of this poem seems well meditated over. The objections: from ‘Suddenly collapsed the heap of dreams’ to ‘Thou shall not return, now I know’ all those lines I felt did not belong in this poem. You have given God the attributes of a hand: comforter, molder, playmate then, He suddenly leaves? This does not sit well, especially since God never leaves or abandons us, why does He in Your poem? I realize that when you say ‘The hand left me…’ you most likely don’t mean it as, left never to return, but rather stood back a short while to admire its work—you. Then why not express that somehow, using descriptions that would be specific to a hand like: beckoned, or pointed, or gripped, or broke. Words like these might better describe the hand’s sudden change in behavior towards its creation.
Overall I thought this piece was insightful, personal, and meditative. Thank you for writing it. Praise God the give of good ideas!
