The Day I heard Your Sickness



I remember it was Sunday morning,
Sun was bright and your phone bell ringing.
I was happy to hear your voice on the other side,
But more worried of test repots that had just arrived.
I heard it was positive-- & for a moment
My heart sank;
My breath left me;
I felt helpless,
And I didn’t know what to do.
--Just could feel the warmth below my eyes,
Reaching the Church with nothing but all my sighs.
Sobbing, wishing, complaining, and praying with my heart,
I asked my Father to never set us apart.

Right there & there I heard a voice speak,
“You’ll see a miracle, only if you seek.”
With love and affection, “medicines you take,”
I would say
Fasting & praying & asking all the way
I found you healed completely
At last one day;
I thank You Lord for everything
I will glorify Your name till the end of all the being.

Hello again Joyce, our Lord has enabled me the time to comment a second time on your works I hope these are encouraging you. “The Day I Heard Your Sickness“, the good: This poem seemed to me to be written out of personal experience. Phrases like: “Reaching the Church with nothing but all my sighs.” and “I asked my Father to never set us apart.” attest to this hypothesis. Also the fact that the subject of the poem deals with a hospitalizing disease, probably cancer, adds to this idea as these kinds of circumstances have been known to move people into writing poetry. Whether it is or isn’t I commend you on the very authentic mindset captured in this piece. The rhyme scheme of this piece also captured my attention. It began with the typical A/A, B/B pattern then moved into a brief free verse--to underscore the rawness of the poet’s helplessness at the news? Very nice. Then returning to the A/A rhyme scheme with a slight variation in the second stanza of B/B/B. I like how you’ve experimented with the rhyme in this piece.

The objections: I’m not sure I understand the overall message of this poem. God says, “You’ll see a miracle, only if you seek.” but I’m left feeling that this seeking has barely taken place. Are you trying to say that it was in the love and affection showed, and in the urging to take the medicines that the poet sought the Lord? This seems rather shallow to me. It’s as if to say that when God says to us, ‘seek Him’ what He means is use common sense and then you will find Me. And while this can be a very true reality, I find that many times seeking God involves a challenging and changing of our spiritual perspective that comes with doing the common sense tasks. Therefore I feel like a profound line should have been in this poem somewhere that fully describes what the poet has learned in her seeking of God because of this situation. Thank you for writing this piece and the emotion it has provoked, may the creative God give you more inspiration.
