Love The New Covenant Fulfillment

“Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. For this, ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,’ and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” (Romans 13:8-10 NASB)

Under the New Covenant, love is not merely a suggestion—it is the fulfillment of God’s law. The Old Covenant gave external commands written on stone. The New Covenant writes love on the heart through the indwelling Holy Spirit. Jesus declared, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another” (John 13:34 NASB). This command captures the spirit and intent behind all of God’s law.

The apostle Paul explains this beautifully: “For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” (Galatians 5:14 NASB). Love is the higher standard that the letter of the law could never achieve on its own. External rule-keeping often produces self-righteousness or condemnation. Love, however, flows from the finished work of Christ and the power of the Spirit. It naturally does what the law demanded but could never produce in fallen flesh.

Jesus kept the Old Covenant law perfectly for us. He fulfilled it completely so we could live under a better covenant. “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes” (Romans 10:4 NASB). We are no longer under the letter that kills, but under the Spirit who gives life (2 Corinthians 3:6 NASB). The law was our tutor to lead us to Christ, but now that faith has come, we are no longer under that tutor (Galatians 3:24-25 NASB).

This does not mean we live lawlessly. Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and live godly lives (Titus 2:11-12 NASB). When we abide in Christ’s love, the Holy Spirit produces the fruit that fulfills the heart of the law: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23 NASB). Love does no wrong. It fulfills every commandment because it seeks the highest good of God and others.

In the New Covenant, we are called to walk by the Spirit so we will not carry out the desire of the flesh (Galatians 5:16 NASB). Focusing on love—God’s love for us and our love for Him and others—transforms us from the inside out. We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19 NASB). As we receive His perfect love, fear is cast out and genuine obedience flows naturally.

Love fulfills the law because it is the very nature of God. “God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 John 4:16 NASB). Under grace, we are not striving to keep stone tablets. We are resting in Christ and allowing His love to live through us. This is the freedom and power of the New Covenant.

Let love be your guiding principle today. As you abide in the love of Christ, you will fulfill the law in the way God always intended—through relationship, not regulation. Love truly is the fulfillment of the law.
