#4 in “Blessing for Senior Saints” series.
"Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth. O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to everyone that is to come." (Psalm 71:9,17-18 KJV)
Since you retired, have you felt neglected, unneeded, and useless? Your relatives and family still love you, but they’re busy with jobs, children, and other obligations. They come to see you when they get the time. You sit at home wondering what to do besides household chores, taking your medicine, and remembering your doctor appointments.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Remember when you were young and needed a job? You had to leave your home to contact prospective employers, fill out forms, write resumes, and keep hunting. Now, your abilities are less and different. Be thankful for what you do have. How can you use what you have to help and bless others? Actively look for ways to serve others. The Psalmist wanted to show God’s strength to the current generation and God’s power to the next generation.
God doesn’t forsake Christians when they get old. Keep ministering. Everyone can maintain a prayer list and pray. Keep a record of how God is answering those requests. Many elderly people would welcome your encouraging phone call – just someone to talk with. Get involved with a hobby or project that will help or bless others. Don’t isolate. Actively search for ways to bless others. Joy comes as you give of yourself to others.
