When Paul and Dina got home, Samuel and Mallory were pulling into the driveway. Paul consulted his watch. It was 6:45. Samuel and Mallory got home fifteen minutes earlier than their children had expected.
"Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad. We went and got dinner," Paul said cheerfully.
Samuel and Mallory noticed their son's happy demeanor. "Wow, it's nice to see you not sulking anymore," Samuel said curtly.
"Yes, this is a nice change," Mallory added. "We were getting tired of your sullen behavior."
Dina couldn't believe how cold her parents sounded. "Mom! Dad! Aren't you guys even going to ask us what happened or how our day went?" she shouted.
Samuel and Mallory were caught off guard by the tone in their daughter's voice. "Young lady, don't you ever raise your voice to us again!" Samuel roared.
"I'm sorry, but Paul and I have put up with your lack of attention long enough!" Dina yelled. "Paul was so hurt by his break-up with Bridget that he didn't even want to live anymore! He was planning to kill himself! He made a list of ways to commit suicide, but praise God that he decided to live after he saw how much I love him!"
Samuel and Mallory were horrified by what Dina had said. The blood drained from their faces. "Is...this...true?" The words slowly came out of Mallory's mouth as her lip quivered.
Paul sighed. It broke his heart to see his mother cry. "Yes," he admitted. As he saw the tears in both of his parents' eyes, he felt a lump in his throat. He swallowed hard.
