Paul patted Dina's head, and they went upstairs to his room. As Paul stretched out on his bed and started to snore, Dina took off her shoes and set them near Paul's desk. Suddenly a piece of paper on her brother's desk caught her attention. It looked like a list. To her horror, she noticed that the list read:
1. Slash my wrists. 2. Take cyanide pills. 3. Jump off a roof. 4. Pull the covers on my bed up over my face to the point where I won't be able to breathe. 5. Drink poison. 6. Stab myself with a kitchen knife. 7. Drive off a cliff and into the ocean. 8. Carbon monoxide poisoning. 9. Shoot myself in the head or in the chest.
Dina noticed that the words "drive off a cliff and into the ocean" were circled. She gasped. Her brother was planning to kill himself! That's why he had given her his favorite cassettes and baseball cards. That's why he wasn't interested in any of the things that he used to be interested in. Dina felt terrible about the jokes she had made while they were in the car. She had only wanted to be lighthearted and cheer her brother up. What if her jokes had only increased his desire to commit suicide? Hot tears started to run down her cheeks as the blood drained from her face. She had to let Paul know how much she loved him, and she had to do it quickly. She climbed into Paul's bed and shook his shoulder until he woke up. When Paul was awake, Dina threw herself into Paul's arms and sobbed until she was almost choking on her tears.
