Devotional #31 in 2 Peter

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.  Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?”  (2 Peter 3:10-12 KJV)

As the Holy Spirit directs and inspires Peter, He writes, including an extensive time frame: the Rapture, the judgment of the Tribulation, the Second Coming, the Millennium, and the new heaven and the new earth.  The first heaven and earth will pass away.  (Revelation 21:1)

We are looking forward to the time of Christ coming back.  He will make all things right at that time.  But, until then, what should be our viewpoint of life?  All the material things, possessions,  playthings of this life will be burned up.  Jesus taught “a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” (Luke 12:15).  He said in Matthew 6:33  “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

So, Peter writes in our text today, “Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,”

What are you living for?  Things, or Jesus?  It’s time to decide.  Set your affections on Christ, who is our life.  (Colossians 3:1-4).
