Time Given For Repentance

Devotional #30 in 2 Peter

“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:8-9 KJV)

We measure time in relation to our own life span.  When we are young, we think we will never be old enough to drive or to graduate from high school.  When we are old,  we look back and marvel at how short our time has been.  “Thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee:”  (Psalm 39:5).

But in God’s time frame, a thousand years is as one day.  Think of that!  Methuselah lived to be 969 years old.  That’s less than two days as God sees it. 

 God has offered salvation to “whosoever will” receive Christ as Savior from sin and hell.  He doesn’t back down from His promise, but because He loves all humanity, He gives more time for people to be saved.  The two thousand years since Christ’s life, death, and resurrection on earth are but two days in God’s timing.  If you are unsaved, He is pleading with you to repent and be saved.  If you are already saved, He is urging you to give out the gospel to a lost and dying world.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

“I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.” (Revelation 21:6)
