“For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.” 2 Timothy 4:3 NLT

Several years ago, our church went through the process of hiring another Pastor. We formed a committee to sort through hundreds of applicants, review resumes, visit (when possible) their current churches, listen to them preach, interview the real contenders, and narrow it down to the single candidate they felt was the best fit for our church. Then, the prospect and his family mingled with the church members at a pot luck, preached on Sunday, and members voted.

I found it interesting that this particular candidate had never even attended Bible College. Instead, he had a Bachelor’s in Rhetoric. Yes - you read that right—Rhetoric! I’ll be honest, I had to look it up. (Rhetoric—the study of writing or speaking as a means of communication or persuasion). Persuasion!

Fortunately, this pastor’s heart was in the right place. He did his best to deliver a Bible-based message each Sunday. Each Sunday, he taught Biblical truth and many were persuaded to live more God-centered lives sold out for the King. Yet there are some very prominent Pastors and Teachers, who—though they may have the perfect credentials—are persuading people to believe and live in ways contrary to what the Bible says. They are twisting scripture to say whatever people want to hear.

Beware, brothers and sisters, not to be led astray by these false prophets. Be sure to bounce everything you hear against the Word of God—this is the only source of truth.

What is your truth?
