May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13 NIV)

I sipped coffee and perused Zillow for the fourth time this week. I had found myself in this exact spot many times in the past few months, compelled by an unrecognizable force. It made no sense. We currently lived in a house that was perfect for us. Sure, it was larger than we needed and came with a few difficult neighbors—but who didn’t have those? Yet, lately my life has become an avalanche of chaos: loved ones arrested, relationships severed or hanging by a thread, major health issues…coming face-to-face with the muzzle of a gun. I felt this overwhelming urge to turn tail and run, to escape the horror.

So here I was on my tablet imagining myself in one of these serene lakefront properties: kayaking, walking the dog, and swimming in the pool. Though I wasn’t typically a pool person, the sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling over the warm breeze as the cool water lapped over my tired body sounded pretty good right now.

Yet, something I read this morning kept gnawing at my mind, invading my tranquil imaginings. In Jeremiah 29:11, God reminded me that He had plans for me, plans not to harm me, but to give me hope and a future. At that moment, it was almost as if I heard His still, small voice say, Trust me. I got this.

I closed the tablet and prayed. I realized that I had been trying to take control of the situation, seeking peace through worldly things when real contentment comes from the one and only true God. Of course, deep down I already knew this, but how like me to try to control my own destiny. After months of churning, I finally let go and turned my fractured circumstances over to Him and felt God’s incomprehensible peace wash over me in waves of joy and hope.

What is God calling you to relinquish today?
