Author requests article critique

Two nights later, Mark called Neil. His brother could instantly sense the tension in his voice. "Whoa, Mark, take a deep breath and tell me what's going on."

Mark huffed before answering. "It's Mom. She's just impossible! Whenever I tell her she has to start eating right and don't give in to her demands to buy her more junk food, she either yells at me or gives me the silent treatment."

"I'm sorry, Mark," Neil replied as he exhaled, "but you're doing the right thing. You'd literally be killing Mom by helping her ruin her health if you catered to her anymore. Stick to your guns and keep doing what you know is right, man. I'll keep praying for you guys."

"Thanks, Neil."

"No problem."

After Neil hung up the phone, he turned to his little girl. "Hey, Lizzie, want to come sit on my lap and we'll sing some of our favorite Christmas carols?"

Lizzie nodded and climbed onto her dad's lap. After they sang "O Holy Night", "We Three Kings", "Away In A Manger", "What Child Is This", and about a dozen other Christmas songs, they went to bed.

Neil was still asleep when his cell phone rang the next morning. He had been so exhausted that he snored right through the ringing, but when he woke up, he saw that Mark had texted him.

This morning when I opened the top drawer in my office, where I always keep my wallet when I'm at home, I saw that my wallet was missing. As I was looking for it, I saw a delivery driver from DoorDash on the porch. The driver was handing Mom some cookies, cupcakes, and ice cream. In other words, Mom went behind my back and stole my wallet while I was asleep so she could buy junk food for herself!

Neil was shocked. Actually, he was more than shocked. He was appalled! How dare his mother steal from her own sons! He knew he had to confront her. He quickly woke Lizzie, and they scrambled into their clothes and jackets. Neil talked to Mark on speaker as they approached Gayla's house.

Lizzie heard the entire conversation between her dad and her uncle. As soon as they entered the house, Lizzie instantly stormed into the living room and approached the chair in which Gayla was sitting. "You stole money from Uncle Mark! Give it back to him right now, Grandma!" she screamed.

Gayla was furious at being startled. With a look of rage in her eyes, she snarled, "You scared me to death! I could have had a heart attack! Get away from me!"

She pushed her granddaughter so roughly that Lizzie fell to the floor and landed on her arm in a painful manner. She started to cry.

Neil was at his little girl's side in a moment. After inspecting her arm to make sure it wasn't broken, he glared at his mother. "If you get a heart attack, it's not because you were scared! It's because you ate more junk food than Santa Claus on Christmas Eve!" he shouted. "You had no right to steal from Mark in the first place, and pushing and yelling at my daughter like you did is also inexcusable! I'm sorry I ever brought her here to meet you!" With that, Neil stormed out of the house, still carrying Lizzie in his arms.
