Paul became more and more depressed throughout the day. Finally, he told his family what happened as they sat at the dinner table together. He didn't get the emotional support from his parents that he had hoped for.
"I'm very sorry to hear that you and Bridget broke up, dear, but you're a bright and intelligent boy. You'll find someone else," was all Mallory said.
"There are lots of fish in the sea," was all that Samuel said.
Right after Samuel and Mallory briefly talked to their son, they went back to discussing their jobs and things that happened at work that day. They didn't even pay attention to Dina when she tried to tell them that she had aced her science and math tests.
Paul stood up, roughly pushed in his chair, went upstairs, and put on his pajamas and bathrobe. He then proceeded to lethargically brush his teeth. As he spit the last of the toothpaste into the sink, he felt the will to live begin to drain from him. Paul went into his bedroom and closed the door. He lay down on his bed and cried as he stared at the ceiling. He moaned loudly and rolled over on his side. He was exhausted, and yet he was restless. If only I could go to sleep and never, ever wake up , Paul thought to himself. He closed his eyes and prayed silently. Jesus, I received You as my personal Lord, God, and Savior when I was four. I know that You will take my soul if I die before I wake up. I don't want to live without Bridget. Please take me tonight so that I'll never have to wake up again.
A knock at the door interrupted his thoughts and prayers. "Paul, it's Dina. Can I come in?"
Paul was still in his trance of sadness, but this time he heard his little sister's voice. "Sure, sis. Come on in." He sat up and wiped his eyes.
Dina pushed open Paul's door and walked over to his bed. "I don't want to sleep in my room tonight. There's a spider in there." Dina has suffered from arachnophobia for five years. The family had gone on a camping trip when she was six years old. During the trip she was bitten by a black widow and rushed to the emergency room. Dina climbed up onto Paul's bed. 'Is it OK if I sleep in here, or do you want to be left alone?" Dina was very frightened of spiders, but she also knew that her older brother had just gone through something that was very depressing for him. She didn't know if he was up to having any company that night.
Paul reached out and pulled Dina onto his lap. "Of course you can stay in here," he said. "You're always welcome in here."
"Thanks, Paul," Dina said.
"No problem, kiddo. I don't feel much like talking, but it's definitely okay with me if you stay in here."
"Do you feel like getting hugs?" Dina asked.
Paul sighed again. His little sister was so sweet. "Sure." As Dina's little arms went around his neck, Paul wrapped his arms around her and squeezed her tightly.
Dina suddenly felt her older brother's body trembling. He was soon sobbing. She hugged him more tightly and kissed his cheek. As she hugged Paul, she silently asked Jesus Christ to help her brother to be happy again and to find a nice girl.
