Dina always attended Paul's track events. She loved to cheer him on as he ran around the track. She loved it when he hoisted her onto his strong shoulders and carried her back to his car at the end of every track event. There were a couple of things Dina didn't like when she went to her brother's track events. She hated that she had to sit next to Paul's girlfriend, Bridget MacDougall. Dina didn't care for Bridget. Bridget was a pretty girl with auburn hair and emerald eyes, but Dina couldn't stand her at all. Bridget was very possessive and selfish. She got mad whenever Paul talked to his female friends. Before Paul and Dina went home, Paul would kiss Bridget goodnight for about five minutes. Dina always tried to be polite by smiling whenever she talked to Bridget, but every time she saw her brother and Bridget kissing, she turned away in disgust.

When Paul and Dina tried to talk to their parents about what they did during the day, Samuel and Mallory were often busy doing work that they brought home from their offices. "Not now," they would say to Paul and Dina. Dina was hurt that their parents didn't pay too much attention to them, but she took comfort in knowing that her older brother cared enough to spend time with her. Paul, on the other hand, was deeply hurt by Samuel and Mallory's lack of attention. He would try to tell them how he and Dina felt. Paul wanted to talk to them about his nervousness. He was stressed about moving all the way from Seattle to Princeton. He was worried about homesickness. He was anxious about the expectations he had heard about. After all, Princeton was an Ivy League school. The professors' standards were higher than the standards at most of the universities in the country. He worried about not doing well enough to achieve his dream of becoming a lawyer like Samuel. Paul had also been having some problems in his relationship with Bridget. They had been arguing a lot lately, and he was afraid that they wouldn't stay together. Paul wanted to let his parents know about what was going on, but they were just never available to listen.
