Paul Connors seemed to have it all. He was a senior in high school and the top student in his class. He was well on his way to being the valedictorian for the class of 1983. He had made it to Princeton University on his grades, SAT scores, and a track scholarship. Paul came from a very well-to-do family. His father, Samuel, was a highly successful corporate lawyer. His mother, Mallory, was a high-powered executive for a major fashion industry in Seattle. Paul's precocious yet adorable eleven-year-old sister, Dina, was a devoted ballet student. Dina loved Paul and looked up to him in every way. She was the apple of her older brother's eye.

There was no doubt about it. Many people thought Paul was happy in every way. The truth was that he was really troubled. He was quite depressed, because his parents were so busy with their work that they had little to no time for him and Dina. Samuel and Mallory often missed Paul's track events and Dina's ballet recitals. Paul and Dina often ordered Chinese food for dinner. They would also purchase TV dinners and order food from other restaurants. Their parents were always too tired to cook. Paul was always the one who tucked Dina in and kissed her goodnight when she went to bed. Whenever Dina had a bad dream, she would go into Paul's room. Her brother always held her close and stroked her long, curly black hair until she went back to sleep. Very rarely did they go to church together as a family. Samuel and Mallory often slept in, so Paul and Dina would go to church alone.

Paul always took Dina to her ballet classes. He would sit in his car for an hour while the ballet classes were in session. He would often do his homework to pass the time away while he waited for Dina's classes to end. Sometimes he was so tired from his track practices that he would lean his head back against the driver's seat and doze off until Dina's classes were over. When the classes ended, Paul went into the ballet academy to get Dina. The parking lot was always busy after the ballet classes. Because Dina was very petite, Paul never let her walk to his car alone. As they walked back to his car, Paul kept his arm around his sister's shoulders to guide her away from the cars that drove through the parking lot. Dina always felt very protected when she was with her brother.
