When Neil woke up the next morning, it was nine o'clock. His neck and back ached from the awkward position he'd slept in all night as he held Lizzie on his hip, but that was okay. Ever since her mother died, Lizzie found more comfort in her father's strong arms than ever before. Truth be told, Neil found a lot of comfort in holding his daughter close to him. She was a constant reminder that he hadn't lost everyone he loved.

He gently kissed the top of her head, then rubbed the back of his neck. As he ran his fingers through his curly dark hair, which was now disheveled, Neil decided to call his brother and talk to him about their mom's problems and how they could best help her. He hoisted Lizzie higher onto his hip as he dialed his brother's phone number. "Daddy's going to call Uncle Mark, okay, sweetheart?" he whispered.

Lizzie, who was still asleep, just replied, "Mmm," as she rested her head directly underneath her father's chin.

Neil chuckled softly, then turned his attention to the phone. After a couple of rings, Mark answered it. "Hello?"

"Hey, man, I hope I'm not catching you at a bad time. I just haven't been able to stop thinking about Mom. What on Earth has happened to her? I didn't see any food from the basic food groups in her bedroom, just a bunch of sweets. She put on so many pounds that I couldn't believe she was our mom!"

Mark sighed heavily. "Dude, she's been this way since Dad died. She stopped taking care of herself until she let herself get to 700 pounds. She never gets up and does anything. She's completely sedentary."

Neil and Mark decided right then and there that Gayla needed round-the-clock care. She needed someone to monitor her 24/7, someone to make sure she didn't eat any sweets and got exercise every day. Neil decided to call the doctor's office where he worked to see if anyone knew if any places in his mother's area.
