Author requests article critique

When Neil and Lizzie were back at their cabin and Neil was seated on the couch, Lizzie quietly asked, "Daddy, can you cuddle me?"

Neil's heart melted at her request, and he opened his arms. As his daughter settled on his lap, he wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly to his chest. He could see that she was still upset about what had happened when they went to see his mom. Pressing a kiss to her forehead, he whispered, "You know, honey, Grandma didn't mean what she said. She's always been kind of cantankerous."

Lizzie frowned. "What does that mean?"

Neil rested his chin on the top of her head. "Well, honey, it means she has a bad temper," he said quietly. "Your grandma doesn't have Jesus in her heart, and so she doesn't always treat people the way she should."

"I'll pray for her to love Jesus and people," Lizzie promised.

Neil kissed her on the forehead again, and they prayed for Gayla to invite Jesus Christ into her heart to be her personal Lord, God, and Savior. After they prayed for her and ate delicious ham sandwiches for lunch, they spent the rest of the day playing in the snow. They built snowmen and made snow angels.

That night after they enjoyed a yummy spaghetti dinner and Neil tucked his daughter in for the night, he settled on the couch and stared out the window at the fallen snow. He has spent the whole day trying to hide his grief from his daughter. He was still devastated by the fact that this was their first Christmas without his beloved Laura. The fact that his mother was still so cold toward him (and the fact that she was killing herself by letting herself get morbidly obese) added to his grief, and he shed tears until he was exhausted. When he finished crying, he picked up his Bible and read from the Book of Psalms, something he often did when he was in intense emotional pain. He had been doing it ever since Laura died.

Neil's snores soon filled the room and awakened Lizzie. Rubbing her sleepy eyes, she came out of the bedroom and entered the living room. She found her dad on the couch, half sitting and half lying down, his mouth slightly open. She noticed that he has been crying and curled up like a cat on his lap. Although Neil didn't wake, he felt his daughter's presence. Instinctively and protectively, he hoisted her onto his hip as he continued to snore. Lizzie rested her head against his shoulder and soon went back to sleep.
