So Who Is My Neighbor?

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:29 NIV

Jesus answers the expert of the laws question with the parable of the Good Smaritan (verses 30-35). So, who is Jesus saying is our neighbor? Might He be saying that everyone with whom we come into contact with can be considered our neighbor? Is neighbor defined by a certain proximity to where we are? I don’t believe that to be the case. We wish to reduce those who we can call neighbor in order to reduce our obligation to those we must love. Did Jesus ever meet someone who He did not love? No! So, if we want to be His followers, we must love as He loves, without excluding those who have opposite viewpoints or other opposing views than us. We must love all as Jesus does. We must even love our enemies.
