On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” Luke 10:25-28 NIV

Here Jesus has a conversation with an expert of the law. The man knew what was the most important command issued by God, and Jesus told him if he obeyed this command, he would live. Here Jesus meant more than just live in terms of breathing and existing. Yes, the Lord means that one will truly live by carrying out both parts of the commandment. True blessings will fall upon one who does this. To do this one must truly love themselves, so that they might love their neighbor as themselves. The task before us is easier said than done, but if we truly are followers of the Lord, we must obey and love others as we love ourselves.
