Sanctified Dissatisfaction – Why Holy Hunger Is a Sign of Growth

Have you ever had that feeling where you’re doing pretty well—but deep down, you just know there’s more? Like you're moving in the right direction spiritually, but there’s still a holy discontent stirring inside you?

That feeling... that tug in your soul that says, “I’m thankful for where I am, but I know I’m not done yet”—that’s what I call sanctified dissatisfaction.

And Paul the Apostle? He knew exactly what that felt like.

“Not There Yet... But I’m Not Staying Here”

In Philippians 3:12-13, Paul opens his heart and says something most of us need to hear:

“Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after... forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.”

In other words, “I haven’t arrived, but I refuse to stop moving.”

Now this is Paul we’re talking about—apostle, church planter, miracle worker, author of a huge chunk of the New Testament. If anyone had spiritual credentials, it was him. But he’s not coasting. He’s not satisfied. He’s not looking around thinking, “I’m doing better than most folks.” No, he’s chasing Christ like his life depends on it.

He’s spiritually hungry. And that’s the kind of hunger God honors.

A Story of Honest Hunger

Let me take you back to a time in my own life when this truth came alive for me.

I had already built a successful business—junk removal, of all things. From nothing, I was making good money. I was self-employed, had freedom, and even did some traveling. From the outside looking in, things were solid.

But one day, I found myself sitting in my small Hollywood apartment, looking around at the success I had built... and I felt empty.

Not broke. Not depressed. Just unsatisfied. Spiritually.

I knew God had done something in me and for me—but I also knew He wasn’t finished with me. I had let my walk cool. I had drifted from the fire I once had. That was my turning point.

I opened my Bible, and the verse in Philippians jumped out at me like a spotlight from heaven:
“This one thing I do... I press toward the mark.”

Right then and there, I repented. Not from scandalous sin, but from spiritual laziness. I asked God to rekindle that fire in me. And guess what? He did. That was the beginning of a new phase in my walk with Christ—more intentional, more focused, more surrendered.

That, my friend, is sanctified dissatisfaction.

Beware of False Confidence

You see, the Bible warns us about the danger of thinking we’re doing better than we really are. Look at the church in Sardis (Revelation 3:1). They had a reputation for being alive—but Jesus said they were dead.

Or Laodicea, who bragged about being rich and needing nothing. But Jesus saw them as “wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked” (Revelation 3:17). Their problem? They were self-satisfied. Comfortable. And it made them spiritually lukewarm.

And Samson? He thought he still had the power of God, but when he got up to fight like before, the Spirit had already left him—and he didn’t even know it (Judges 16:20).

That’s why Paul was so cautious. He never assumed he had “arrived.” He said, “I keep pressing. I keep reaching.” Because even when you’re walking with God, there’s always more of Him to know.

The Soul’s Thirst for More

Psalm 42:1-2 paints the picture beautifully:

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”

That’s what sanctified dissatisfaction looks like. You love the Lord. You’ve seen His hand in your life. But you want more of Him—more clarity, more closeness, more purpose, more fruit.

That’s not discontentment—it’s devotion. And it’s the fuel of spiritual growth.

Final Thoughts: Keep Pressing

Let me leave you with this:

Sanctified dissatisfaction doesn’t mean beating yourself up or thinking you’re not good enough for God. It means you love Him too much to settle.

It’s that inner push to keep praying when others are coasting.
It’s showing up in the Word even when you feel dry.
It’s asking, “Lord, what do You want to shape in me next?” even when you’ve made progress.

That kind of hunger? God honors it. Every single time.

So, if you’ve been feeling restless in your walk—don’t ignore it. That could be God stirring something deeper in you. Lean into it. Let it lead you closer, not further away.

Paul never stopped pressing toward the mark. And neither should we.
