What does courage mean? I hear you ask,
As we consider the great war,
We struggle to find a meaning.

There on the hill at Gallipoli;
Amid the rugged landscape, a message is conveyed,
As we see the bitter conflict;
The destruction of mankind’s restless soul,
Displayed in a senseless waste!

Brave men enter the deathly fray,
Found in the breaking of the new dawn.

They did not desire what was found,
But willingly they offered their lives and limbs,
For a young country, discovering its way in freedom.

Mates; laying down their lives,
In the face of the enemy,
The blood, The smell, The Horror, The pain and loss
Surrounds them, from their every side.

There in the midst of all this noise;
Stood a tree
A lone pine that speaks of pain and death,
The Anzac’s lost, so it seemed;
The Turks victorious; but their offspring,
Are still buried in the ground!

What does courage mean? I hear you ask,
As we consider those diggers, laying down their lives,
We start to see great meaning.

There on the hill at Calvary,
Amid the rugged landscape, a message is conveyed;
As we see His loving suffering;
The restoration of mankind’s restless soul,
Displayed in a living hope!

Jesus, entered our death for us,
The commencing of a new dawn.

He did not desire what was found,
But not His will, but God’s, He offered His Life,
For young and old, realising for us true freedom.

Jesus; laying down His life,
For His enemies,
The blood, The nails, The pain, The crown of thorns,
Surrounds Him, and brings us to God’s side.

There in the midst of all this noise;
Stood a tree
A cross that speaks of love and hope,
The Messiah lost, so it seemed;
But there the story does not end
For He has risen from the ground!

What does courage mean? I hear you ask,
As we consider our blessed Saviour, laying down His life,
We gain the greatest meaning!
