A prayer inspired by Psalm 42

Lord God,

As Christmas approaches this year,

I confess that my heart is just not in it,

I see bright lights and decorations,

And see joyous and excited faces around me,

But deep down I feel numb,

Even as I open your Word,

My heart feels empty of joy and praise,

I know that I have much to be thankful for,

But I admit that I am overwhelmed by grief,

As I come to the end of this year,

I can’t help but remember the challenges around me,

That threaten to drown me each day,

And the hopes and plans I once had for this year,

Have now ended in failure and disappointment,

I have grown weary,

And I have forgotten how to laugh,

I remember a time that now feels long ago,

When I was filled with hope and thanksgiving,

I would eagerly meet with your people each week and sing your praises,

My faith grew from strength to strength,

As I would discover new truths every time I opened your Word,

And it seemed like nothing could dampen my spirit,

Lord, I call out to you from the depths where I have fallen,

Only you can lift me up,

I know that there are seasons in life,

And although my heart remains cold,

I keep putting my hope in you,

Trusting that I will not always feel this way,

And that one day soon I will praise you again,

This Christmas Lord, I desire,

More than any physical present,

Please renew my spirit.
