Financial writer and precious metals broker Bill Holter has warned about a slowing economy since the Federal Reserve's 0.5% rate cut in September. Holter questions, “If the economy is so strong, why cut rates?” Meanwhile, President Joe Biden claimed that his administration was leaving office with “the strongest economy in modern history.” However, a recent Fox News poll paints a different picture, with 77% of voters giving Biden “negative ratings” on his handling of the economy. Mounting unpayable debts and insolvency issues fuel discussions about a potential “economic reset.”
One significant warning sign comes from the Bank of England, which announced a controversial policy starting January 1, 2025. Holter explains, “The Bank of England said that whenever they bail out an institution, they will no longer disclose it to the public. That tells me 2025 is the year of the reset. Why would they need to bail anyone out if the markets and economy are supposedly doing so well?” Holter suggests this lack of transparency signals deeper economic troubles that are not being openly acknowledged.
Turning to U.S. government spending, Holter critiques the Trump administration's proposal to cut expenditures through the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He argues that reduced government spending could severely impact economic growth: “Last year, GDP was roughly $29 trillion. Cutting $2 trillion in spending would eliminate about 7% of that GDP. Instead of 2% or 3% growth, we’d see negative growth of -4% to -5%. Since 2008, without deficit spending, the U.S. economy would have been contracting.”
Holter also highlights the unsustainable nature of growing debt, with interest payments exceeding $1 trillion annually and rising rapidly. He emphasizes that even if Trump returns to office, “he won’t be able to save the system because it’s just math. The financial system is a Ponzi scheme dependent on deficit spending and monetary expansion. Trump can ensure the rule of law is followed, but he can’t fix the underlying mathematics.”
Holter predicts the economic reset will occur in two stages. First, banks will be bailed out, but depositors will be “bailed in,” meaning individuals could lose their money as new laws have classified depositors as unsecured creditors. Holter warns that stockholders could also see their shares confiscated during what he calls “the great taking.”
In the second stage, the global economy will reject digital dollars and other cryptocurrencies for real goods. Holter states, “The world will demand real payment for goods. That’s when the price of everything resets.” He foresees tangible assets like gold and silver soaring in value, while most other assets will decline significantly. According to Holter, this will mark a period of “true price discovery.”
