Adding value to others is essential if we hope to be placed in positions of leadership and increase our earnings. Here are four practical ways to add greater value to others and become a true problem solver.

1. Understand the Needs of Others

The first step in solving problems is understanding the specific needs of those around us. This requires active listening and empathy. Instead of assuming what someone needs, ask questions like:

• “What’s your biggest challenge right now?”


• “How can I help make this easier for you?”

Jesus modeled this perfectly when He healed people. He didn’t just act—He asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:51). By identifying the real need, you can tailor your solutions and add genuine value.

2. Develop Your Skills and Expertise

The greater your ability to solve problems, the more value you bring to others. This means investing in yourself by developing new skills, honing your talents, and learning continuously. For example:

• If you’re in business, study marketing or customer service to better serve your clients.


• If you’re a leader, learn conflict resolution or team management.

Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings.” When you become excellent in your field, you attract opportunities to lead and serve at higher levels.

3. Solve Problems Proactively

Great leaders and problem solvers don’t wait for problems to arise—they anticipate them. Think ahead about how you can address challenges before they become crises. This mindset shows initiative and builds trust.

For example, if you notice a friend struggling financially, offer budgeting advice or connect them to resources before they reach a breaking point. In business, proactive problem solvers often become indispensable because they prevent costly mistakes.

4. Serve with Humility

True value comes from serving others selflessly. Whether it’s through your time, expertise, or resources, a mindset of service builds long-term influence. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). When you prioritize others’ success, you create lasting impact.
