Be So Good They Can't Ignore You

What do you want out of life? Success, recognition, happiness, fulfillment? The answer is simpler than you think: you have to be so good at what you do that they can’t ignore you.

I think that phrase came from the actor and comedian Steve Martin.

In a world overflowing with noise and distractions, standing out doesn’t mean shouting louder—it means mastering the fundamentals so well that your results speak for themselves. As Vince Lombardi, the legendary football coach for the 1960's Green Bay Packers said: “Football is about blocking, tackling, and fundamentals.” Lombardi would start every season by holding up a ball and saying, “Gentlemen, this is a football.” He stressed the basics because mastering them is the foundation of greatness.

The same is true for any craft. If you focus on fundamentals—doing the small, seemingly simple things consistently and exceptionally—you’ll rise above the competition. Greatness isn’t glamorous; it’s often tedious and unexciting. But it’s in those moments, grinding away at the basics, that you set yourself apart.

Take one of my own experiences as an example. In Marine Corps boot camp, I left the flag safety out of my M-16 rifle—a big no-no. The drill instructor in charge made sure I wouldn’t forget that mistake anytime soon. His “classroom” wasn’t filled with desks and books but with sweat, rocks, and the steepest hill you can imagine. I and several other recruits were commanded with a loud shout to run down this steep hill and pick up the biggest rock we could find.  I grab a nearby rock and run back up the hill as fast as my scrawny little legs could move.  
"Hey, this is pebble" shouted the DI.  "I said get me a big rock"

Down the hill I ran hoping to find something bigger but not too heavy that I couldn't carry it back up the hill.  The Lord provided me a rock and I was able to appease my DI.  I was reminded (loudly) about the importance of following basic procedures. By the end, I was exhausted, humbled, and much more mindful of the fundamentals. The lesson stuck: master the basics, or the basics will master you. 
A few days later after not qualifying on pre-qual day I put ten bullets into the bull's eye from a prone position at 500 meters-a perfect score! That and my other excellent shooting got me qualified as an expert rifleman.  Later, back at the barracks, my drill instructor Sgt Magee complimented me on my performance which left me feeling encouraged.

What It Takes to Stand Out

To be exceptional, you don’t need flashy gimmicks or shortcuts—you need consistent, focused effort. Think of your craft like Lombardi thought of football: block, tackle, and repeat. Here are some key principles to help you shine:

  Master the Basics: Whatever your field, start with the fundamentals. It’s not about reinventing the wheel; it’s about perfecting it. Vince Lombardi didn’t win championships with trick plays; he won because his teams could block and tackle better than anyone else.

  Sacrifice for Greatness: To stand out, you have to give up something—whether it’s time, comfort, or scrolling endlessly through social media. While your competitors are binge-watching the latest show, you’re honing your craft. (Unless your craft is TV reviews, in which case, carry on.)

  Learn from Mistakes: Failure isn’t just inevitable; it’s necessary. Every mistake is a chance to improve. Just like that drill instructor's hill runs taught me, setbacks can be painful but invaluable. Laugh at yourself, learn, and get better.

Effort Beats Talent Every Time

There’s a common misconception that talent is everything. Sure, talent helps, but effort wins. Natural ability may get someone noticed, but it’s relentless effort and deliberate practice that keeps them at the top. The difference between the good and the great isn’t their starting point; it’s their willingness to outwork everyone else.

The great ones don’t just put in a little more effort—they put in way more effort. While everyone else takes shortcuts, they take the long road. When others quit early, they stick it out. They’re the ones showing up before practice starts and staying late after everyone’s gone.

As I always say you can tell those people who really love their work.  These are the people who have a smile on their face coming to work and a frown on their face leaving.  The under performers are just the opposite. They arrive to work with a frown on their face and leave with a smile.

Make People Notice You Without Trying to Be Noticed

The beauty of true mastery is that you don’t have to scream, “Look at me!” When you’re excellent, people will naturally take notice. Your results will demand attention, not your words. It’s like the difference between an amateur cook and a Michelin-star chef: one announces the meal, the other lets the food speak for itself.

So ask yourself: are you willing to put in the effort to be great? Are you willing to master the basics, put in the extra work, and laugh at your mistakes along the way? Because if you do, you’ll find that being exceptional isn’t just about success—it’s about becoming the best version of yourself.

Final Thought

Greatness doesn’t require perfection—it requires consistent improvement, a sense of humor when things go wrong, and the grit to keep going when others quit. Just remember: whether it’s football, rifle safety, or any other craft, the basics are your foundation. Master them, and the world won’t just notice you—they won’t be able to look away.
