Drinking a cup of green tea can be relaxing, especially when you're feeling stressed or anxious. But green tea isn’t just comforting—it might also help fight cancer.
What Makes Green Tea Special?
Green tea comes from a plant called Camellia sinensis. While there are many types of tea—like black tea, oolong tea, and white tea—green tea stands out because it has a lot of natural compounds called catechins. These are powerful antioxidants, and the most important one is called EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate). Studies show that EGCG may help prevent or slow down cancer.
How EGCG Works to Fight Cancer
Cancer is a major health problem, with millions of new cases reported every year. Scientists have found that EGCG can target cancer cells in several ways:
Slowing Cancer Cell Growth: Cancer cells grow and divide quickly. EGCG blocks the signals that allow this to happen, slowing down the spread of cancer.
Cutting Off Blood Supply to Tumors: Tumors need blood to grow, just like other parts of the body. EGCG stops the formation of new blood vessels that feed cancer cells. Without oxygen and nutrients, tumors shrink or stop growing.
Killing Damaged Cells: Our bodies naturally get rid of damaged cells through a process called apoptosis. EGCG helps trigger this process, making it easier for the body to eliminate cancer cells.
Boosting Other Treatments: EGCG makes cancer cells more sensitive to traditional treatments like chemotherapy, helping them work better.
Challenges with EGCG
Even though EGCG has many benefits, there’s a challenge: it’s not easily absorbed by the body. This means it’s hard to get enough of it into your system to make a big difference. Scientists are working on ways to fix this, such as creating special capsules to improve absorption.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Green Tea
Add Lemon: Adding vitamin C, like a squirt of lemon juice, can help your body absorb more EGCG.
Avoid Milk: Milk can reduce the benefits of green tea because its proteins bind to the antioxidants, making them less effective.
Choose High-Quality Tea: Good green tea should actually look green, not brown. Loose tea leaves often have more antioxidants than tea bags, which can also release microplastics when heated.
How Much Green Tea Should You Drink?
Most studies suggest drinking about three cups of green tea a day to get health benefits. Each cup gives you around 20 to 35 milligrams of EGCG. If you enjoy the taste, drinking three cups a day is an easy way to boost your health.
In summary, green tea isn’t just a soothing drink—it’s packed with powerful compounds that can help fight cancer, improve your overall health, and complement traditional treatments. Adding it to your daily routine is a simple step toward a healthier lifestyle.
