Creating Meaningful Meal Times Can Become A Family Tradition

On Wednesday, June 27, 2024, I was listening to a Podcast: ‘Restore the Table: Discovering the Powerful Connections of Meaningful Mealtime’ and was intrigued.

My dream for the family to be restored was highlighted in the vision of the pastor being interviewed. I thought, “Great! Now I have a resource I can share to help restore the home.” Everything being said, resonated with me.

My grandparents introduced that tradition to me. I have fun memories of meal times around the table. Much laughter from Grandpa’s jokes and many tasty dishes prepared by Granny. However, I didn’t understand the value it added to my life until I introduced it to my family.

Such richness comes from the discussions we continue to have at the breakfast and/or dinner table. It is one of my favourite learning spaces.

Our son was three years old when we decided on the size and bought the table we now have. I anticipated a larger family when we bought it but we remained a family of three. As our son became older we invited others into that space at the table. And celebrations continued with a meal around the table, either at home or at a restaurant.

Today, I can look back and see how our lives have been enriched by coming to the table. I can proudly attribute that legacy to my maternal grandparents and I pray that this legacy will continue into the generations to follow.

I definitely recommend meaningful mealtimes whether or not you have a table to come to. I remember sitting on the verandah having dinner, and it was just as meaningful as we were all enjoying quality time together.

Whatever your most positive family traditions are, long may they continue!

Happy Parenting!
