My Focus

I once focused on earthly cares,
It’s problems and it’s trials;
I could see many others failures,
As I journeyed through life’s miles.

I oft’ thought on things unlovely;
Upon all life’s hurt and pain;
I read much of sin and darkness,
And envied the sinner’s gain.

I grew angry towards those ones
Who had wronged, and hurt me so.
I quickly built walls to protect,
But a pris’ner, I did grow.

Other people’s faults and weakness
I was sure to see, and shame.
“I’m glad I’m not like them,” I thought,
As more like them I became.

For the things that I gazed upon,
Slowly began to change me;
Not so quickly, you understand,
But in ways I could not see.

The anger, and unforgiveness
Towards those who had done me wrong,
Fast stopped up the flow of God’s love,
And made me flounder along.

As I dwelt on things unlovely,
And thought on evil and sin,
It tainted my sense of right,
And darkened my soul within.

As I focused on earthly cares,
Things that really matter, were lost.
And though I gained in other’s eyes,
It came with a greater cost.

Then I turned my eyes on Jesus,
The One Who had died for me!
I saw how He forgave and loved,
And His truth set my spirit free!

He showed me what truly matters;
His perfect goodness and love.
It made me want to be like Him,
And live with Him up above.

He showed me how He saw others.
He’d laid down His life for them.
His love went beyond their weakness,
And sought to free them from sin.

He showed me great beauty and good
In people, times, and places!
He showed me bits of His likeness,
In His dear children’s faces.

And then, as I gazed upon Him,
He cleansed me, down deep within.
He showed me what I was truly,
And broke the strong chains of sin.

He helped me focus on Himself,
Not on other petty things,
And I found truest joy and peace,
As I dwelt beneath His wings.

As I walked closer to Jesus,
More of Him, I wanted to know.
And as I gazed much upon Him
The more like Him I did grow.
