Encouragement
To God be the glory Who does everything perfectly. He appoints the right person to the right post at the right time and in the appropriate place. As He does this, those who fight the Lord's battle apply the same procedure that leads to victory all the time.
To record success in every sphere of life, not only in battle matters alone, giving the right job to a proper person has unmeasurable benefits.
This was the case with the people of God when a serious and delicate message was to be delivered to a king who also was a man of war, King David.
The birth of the message.
What gave rise to the message was a result of a conspiracy led by the king's son, Absalom which almost sniffled the life out of King David. At the end of the day, Absalom died on the battlefield against his father.
The question now arose: who was suitable to break the news to the king who loved his son very dearly and instructed his soldiers to spare the young man's life?
An Unfit Volunteer.
Seeing that victory has come to the camp of the king and his supporters, a committed solder chose himself to deliver the victory message:
"Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies. 2 Samuel 18:19.
He was a man of war. He could run to the king. However, he was not fit to deliver the message to the king. The leader told him the truth which did not go down well with Ahimaaz
"And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings because the king's son is dead." 1 Samuel 18:20.
The words of Joab, the army commander did not depict Ahimaaz as a useless man. He had his fit and proper place of use but he was not an appropriate person for the task on hand: breaking the news to the king that the king's son was killed on the battlefield.
The Suitable Man
There were so many soldiers with Joab and he knew each person's ability and suitability for each task. He turned to the right man well equipped for such a task,
"Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab and ran." 2 Samuel 18:21.
Failure Of An Unsuitable Man
The self-appointed man could run more than the appointed man. He arrived at the king's place earlier than Cushi who was given the assignment. That was not the problem. The chosen man could not run as much as the unchosen one but the result was different and that was what mattered most. What was it with Ahimaaz?
"And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was." 1 Samuel 18:29.
He failed when and where it mattered most. The message needed by the king could not be delivered to him. Why then did he run in the first instance? He saw what happened on the battlefield. He knew that Absalom was dead but he had no gut and the required wisdom to deliver the message.
"And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside and stood still." 2 Samuel 18:30.
He was ordered to turn aside and stand somewhere. He stood and was still there. How long he remained standing still was not on record but NOTHING was heard from him or about him throughout the story again. He went down the drain because of self-appointment that ended up in shame.
The Suitable Man
After that came the fit man who had the message, Cushi.
"And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is." 2 Samuel 18:32.
The same question that an unsuitable man could not answer was tackled with wisdom by a suitable man, as displayed above. The question remains, "Is the young man Absalom safe?"
Beloved Pilgrim, know very well that you cannot be suitable for all tasks. embrace the work the Lord has given you to carry out. Do it faithfully with the whole of your heart. He will reward you for it. Do not occupy yourself with a task not meant for you, nor be envious of the work given to another person who is successful in it. You will give an account of the work you are assigned to do and be adequately rewarded.
May the Lord give you the grace to know the work meant for you and the ability to do it the way the Lord wants in Jesus' mighty name. All shall be well with you in Jesus' name. Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord. Shalom
