The prophet exhorts us in Isaiah 43 not to remember the former things because God is about to do a new thing.  And yet three chapters later the same prophet exhorts us to remember the things that God has done and the ways He has worked in the past. So what's up with that?  It seems like a contradiction.  One distinction helps to clarify: if our line of thought is building our faith and confidence in God and is thus edifying us, we should continue in that vein, but if it is undermining our faith and confidence we should discontinue that line of thought, because it will disqualify us as it spirals downward from the new thing God is introducing into our lives. Remembering how God came through for us and others in the past, on the contrary, helps condition us to the fact that He can and will do it again, though it may look and seem different this time.
