Wash One Another's Feet: An Act of True Friendship and Love

John 13:14-15 (KJV)- “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given an example that ye should do as I have done to you.”

John 13: 34 (KJV)- “ A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you,

Proverbs 18 verse 24 states that “there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Friends helped a man sick of palsy get to Jesus to receive healing in Luke chapter 5 verses 18-25. These men washed the feet of the man sick of palsy. Their actions were actions of love and friendship. How far would you go to bring your friends, neighbors, strangers, or family members to Christ?

Likewise, Ruth's actions of love and kindness toward her mother-in-law Naomi were Christ like. Ruth washed Naomi's feet by going to work in the fields to feed both of them because her mother-in-law was too old for that kind of work (see book of Ruth). In Luke chapter 7 verses 36-50, Mary washed Jesus' feet with the hairs of her head with an alabaster box of oil.

Moreover, the Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke chapter 10 verses 30-37, is yet another example of washing one another's feet and showing compassion and love toward our fellow man. “And Jesus answering said; A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him and departed leaving him half dead,” (Luke 10:30 KJV). A priest and a Levite passed by the man and went on the other side and didn't stop to help the man. The priests and Levites were a holy order of peoples among the children of the Lord. A Samaritan was not considered holy like these men were. You would have expected them to have offered the first gestures of help to the wounded man, but they didn't, the Samaritan did.

Father God, I pray we learn to wash one another's feet.
