Under the Icing

For an entire year since their wedding, Chad and Lindsay had stored in their small freezer a foil wrapped plastic box and they were ready to open it up. Though she thought it silly, Lindsay had heard it brought good luck to keep the top layer of their wedding cake and then consume it on their first anniversary. And now it was time to do that.

So it took just a few seconds for Chad to unpeel the foil, open the box and move the contents to a plate. The heavy white frosting and pink curlicues were intact as he found a knife and began to push it through. Then abruptly he paused.

“That’s funny, I can’t do it. It won’t slice, though it should, even if it’s frozen.” Chad paused and pressed again. “No, can’t do it. Let’s see what’s going on.”

Chad used the knife to begin scraping the thick frosting away, to finally to reveal a hard white surface underneath.  Then as he poked the knifepoint at the surface, producing chips and slivers he suddenly he realized what it was. For an entire year there was stored in their tiny freezer a frosting covered, curlicue decked block of Styrofoam.

That unexpected discovery was certainly sudden, just like we also experience on our spiritual journey when we have an abrupt change of plans. And since these plans are often self created without consulting God, the interruption may indicate God has his own plans for us.  

And often that’s exactly the case, and if it is then we find that his ideas are so much better than any of ours. And knowing that, as he assumes control then we realize that in an uncertain and changing world what’s unchanging and ever certain is his love and care.
