Share Christ and Use Words They Are Necessary

Have you heard St Francis of Assisi quoted, "Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words?" 

However, if you investigate, St Francis of Assisi never said those words.  

It is more likely that St Francis agreed with the Bible. 

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Rom 10:17 NAS

The widely circulated St Francis misquote is often sadly used by our flesh to justify our fear of man and avoid the discomfort of sharing the Good News with words. What will people think of us if we share the gospel with them? Will it be offensive to some, as the Bible states? Or, more importantly to our flesh, will they reject us and think we are crazy?

Don't get me wrong, our loving actions should always reflect our words. But the fear of man and our personal comfort are not good reasons to withhold Christ's life-giving words. Doing good, a smile and kind words of encouragement are very important, but they are of a temporary and fleeting nature and save no one unless they are coupled with the Good News. 

How then are they to call on Him in whom they have not believed? How are they to believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? Rom 10:14: NAS 

What helps me overcome the fear of man is to take a sincere look at the person and consider if I have the right to withhold God's forgiveness and eternal life from them. I may be their last and only chance to hear before death takes them. Maybe, just maybe, seeds will be planted and they will come to Christ for eternity. Or perhaps they will reject me. It's absolutely worth the limited risk and I have never regretted sharing my faith even when I have been rejected.

But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not intending to please people, but to please God, who examines our hearts. 1 Th 2:4 NAS

I like to place something in their hands that they can consider when they are alone with their conscience. If nothing else, love them well and at least put the Good News in their hands, even if you must run away before they can reject you.
