Woe! You Leave Me Alone


It was the heaviness
The throes of anguish
The intense angst
trapped in the cusp of chiselled joy.
You break in to my happiness
Little by little laboured strength
Calloused, insensitive, pathetic.
You devastated, you afflicted
My heart into breaking
Beset me until the sun went down
Into the dusk, through the night
You overtook my voice
Dejected, cast me down in lament.
Leave me alone you wretched sorrow!

My loss, my grief, my anger bound me.
You have overstayed long enough
Your torment of my failure must end.

Why do you hold power,
Death and life?
You harmed my young friend
You burdened him with the weight of loneliness
Locked, assailed
Walled in, it seemed to him
He could not understand
Longed for escape
From despair
Reached out for healing
But no one was there
Your sting would not go away
It bound him, plagued him.
Until he gave up his battle

Throbbing stab of defeat
Ended his life of despondency.


To the pit of suffering
If I only knew
If only I had been some light
shone where he was
I’ve failed miserably
Woe and misery
Leave me alone.


The stiffness
My heart overtook me
It beleaguered my mind
Distanced from about
Like a leper gnawed at my skin
Sore
Throb
You were there
Your essence vexed me
But you did not kill me
Who are you?
What are you?
Why spared my life?
Why not my young friend?


I felt what joy meant once
The smell of Pacific Blue roses
Inhaled the sunset at the clearing
Ran down the creek, stumbled but free
To that bliss, I’d see it again.


Time healed the wound
Like the Balm of Gilead
Like the Living Water
Soothed the heartache
Quenched the scorch from the beating sun
That parched
The thirsting, aching soul
The joy, the song,
Brazened the depth of my being.


You succumbed the living souls
to desolation
to suffering.
But they, too, are bound to Him
Their Creator in His image
The Saviour and the Restorer of all life.

I’ve gained a friend in you
Strange you.
Mothers weep at the birth of each child
In anguish heavy joy awaits.

Fathers cling to harshness of life
The work of their hands
The fear of lack
The fear of not able to provide
Your essence terrifies them
But have won you over to subdue you
How will they know glory?
If they had not understood and mastered you.

How would I know healing?
If you were not here
How would I know joy?
If you have not shown me misery.

God forbid sorrow to seek time with me.
My Savior and King,
The Restorer of all life
He suffered and died
That I might live and shine
Trust Him in the throes of existence
Bound to Him in love and service
Where you, Pain,
Shall not trouble me.
