King David’s Pounding Heart (Psalm 27)

King David beats his heart in contrition.
Contrite, praying in supplication.
Alone,
Before God’s throne.
What’s King’s problem needing solution?

He fights in his chamber after ten thousand pinfolds
Of ravenous onslaughts in battle.
Heart pounding,
“Your grace, abounding.”
“I fear no one, not evil, not enemies of Israel!”

I see how King David’s battles hem in,
Assail his soul, his heart’s bound in.
Psalm twenty-seven,
Pounding at the vault of Heaven.
I, too, my heart pounds to seek Him.

Praying to overcome inner vexations,
Preying evils don’t take vacations.
Life’s circumstances change,
Evil camouflage
In different ways like chameleons.

Though I go to different battlefield
Weary within, I want healed.
“Give me, strength, LORD,”
“I want Your Word.”
“Heal me, I shall be healed. Save me, I shall be saved.”

Urgent yearning—morning, noon and night.
Relentless praying, I refuse to decay in might.
"I serve You with all my heart,"
"My throbbing plea, set me apart."
"As King David’s after Your own, in Your sight."

King David feels a pulsating burst of inspiration,
That his heart wells up, not his own decision.
Doesn’t come easily by,
But awakened from on High.
“You’re speaking to me, Your servant, to seek Your Presence.”

I will seek out God's face, His countenance.
His grace and His presence.
King is praising,
I am seeking.
Rhythm in my heartstrings sing and dance.

King David beats his heart in contrition.
I, too, contrite, pray in earnest supplication.
I overcome
Before God’s throne.
Defeat within finds redemption.
