If every decision lay at my command,

And every event occurred by my hand,

If I had the power to control humankind,

Everyone’s future unfolding according to my design,

Then surely from this there is only one reality,

This role is not meant for me,

If I could place every mountaintop,

Place the boundary where the sea would stop,

Measure the world, make everything go,

Learn every secret, all there is to know,

 If I controlled life, growing every seed to its tree,

This role would be too much for me,

If I could be all that people need,

All the hungry hearts, I could feed,

If I could carry any burden, no matter the weight,

Make every path, no matter how crooked, straight,

Then surely from that future I would see,

This role is not meant for me,

If I was a mender of broken hearts,

And perfection was my daily art,

If evil was a price I could pay,

And I could plan the path of any day,

Then surely I would walk blindly,

This role is not meant for me,

If I could prevent disaster before it came,

And clear away sadness, guilt, tears and shame,

If I could grant breath to the dead so they would live,

And eternal hope was something I could give,

I would surrender my urge for control and power to God, because clearly,

This role is not meant for me.
