Finding Christmas Joy

If you are like me, you might generally think of the Christmas season as a time of joy. Many of us enjoy the excitement of decorating our houses, singing our favourite Christmas carols, and eating lots of food with family and friends. On the other hand, Christmas can also be a challenging time for many of us. It can be a time where many of us experience loneliness, grief, financial hardship or family conflicts. Yet, even for those of us who look forward to the arrival of Christmas each year, all of the joys of this season’s festivities pale in comparison to the greater joy that Jesus shares with us.

As the time for Jesus’ crucifixion approached, he was aware of the need to prepare his disciples for the trials they would face after his death and resurrection. No matter what challenges lay ahead for them, Jesus wanted them to know where their true joy would be found. This joy would not be found in any external circumstances, but in Jesus alone, through following his commands and remaining in his love (John 15:10).

Jesus could confidently speak of this joy to his disciples, because it was the same joy that he experienced through obeying God the Father and remaining in his love. In John 4:34, Jesus could speak to them about him finding true fulfilment in following God’s will. Now his disciples could share in this same lasting joy through following his commands and example.

As we approach Christmas this year, may we all be challenged to reflect on where our true joy is found. For some of us, this Christmas season will bring a time of rest and celebration. On the other hand, some of us will be just trying to make it to the end of the year without falling apart. Regardless of our circumstances this Christmas, may we remember that there is a greater and lasting joy that we can share with Jesus through seeking to know and follow him more each day. May we all pray for a greater conviction to seek this joy in him.  

Dear God,

I thank you that you showed your great love for me, by sending Jesus to pay the price for my sins and rise from the dead. May you continue to lead me along the righteous path and teach me to follow and abide in Jesus’ love, just as he abides in your love. Please help me not to find my joy in my circumstances or other people, but through knowing and living for Jesus. I pray that you would give me strength and wisdom as I seek to obey your Word each day. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen
