It sure did not take very long for Pilate to see that the Jewish leaders were attempting to manipulate him into doing their dirty work. To relinquish to them the opportunity to deal with Jesus as they chose sure took some gumption on his part. What would the Roman authorities think? Or was Pilate just calling their bluff?

Pilate realized that there was no real cause, and that Jesus was not truly a criminal, so he wanted nothing to do with these proceedings. Unfortunately, these Jewish leaders were “smarter” than Pilate gave them credit for being. That is to be seen in later verses. Yes, Pilate was to be a part of the salvation of mankind in condemning Jesus to death.
