When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded. John 18:22 NIV
During a trial in Jesus’ time, if an offender showed disrespect for the high priest, the high priest could order that the offender be slapped for his disrespect. Jesus, however, had shown no disrespect for the high priest. So went the proceedings of Jesus’ mock trial.
How do we show disrespect for Jesus? We do so by not following His Word. Until we come to Jesus we are enslaved to our sin. Once we have given our heart to Him, we must live in Him and do that which He asks of us. He has given so much to us. In turn we must give back to Him.
