Lord God,

I confess that as I stare at the world around me,

And see the extent of humanity’s sinfulness,

I have become cynical,

When everyone only cares about looking after number one,

It seems like those who want to do good are always taken advantage of,

When our efforts to love others are met with constant rejection,

It is so easy to just give up trying altogether,

When it seems like all attempts to share the gospel seem fruitless,

I am tempted to just keep my mouth shut and go with the flow,

So Lord,

Remind me that you are still at work in our world,

Just as I was once a sinner who has now received mercy and grace,

Remind me that you continue to do the same for others,

I pray that you would dare me to keep hoping in love,

Teach me to dare to believe that you still work wonders,

When I encounter the brokenness of our world,

Help me to believe that you are the God who mends and heals,

When I encounter people whose hearts are harder than stone,

Help me to believe that you are the God who can change hearts,

When I encounter people caught in reckless sin,

Help me to believe that you are the God who brings sinners to repentance,

When I encounter little fruit from my ministry,

Help me to believe that you are the God who honours all small efforts,

When I encounter people who backslide constantly,

Help me to believe that you are the God whose mercy is limitless,

Lord, have mercy on me for my cynicism,

And help me to persevere in loving others through their failures and brokenness,

For I know that amidst all of my own mistakes and disappointments each day,

I am always loved by you.
