Prayer For A Mourning Friend

Lord God,

I lift up my dear friend in Christ,

Who is mourning for a loved one lost,

Please bring them healing and comfort,

And remind them of your endless love,

Help them to know that you have not deserted them in their grief,

And grant them the strength to hold onto you during this time,

Lord, although I often feel so inadequate in being able to comfort others,

I pray that you would use me now to be a loving support to my friend,

Please help me to avoid the temptation,

Of shying away from talking with my friend about their grief,

And about their loved one who has recently passed away,

But I pray also for the courage and the wisdom in knowing the right words to say to them,

Please help me to avoid words that may cause more hurt,

Or be unhelpful in the current situation,

But teach me to be sensitive to the needs of my friend,

So that they may find comfort and hope through my words,

Teach me also to know when it is best to say no words at all,

And to simply listen and share in my friend’s grief,

Please also grant me wisdom in knowing how to show love in practical ways,

Such as praying with my friend,

Or finding ways to assist them in everyday chores,

Or sending them financial or material support,

Or even just sending them an occasional message of encouragement and hope,

But even more importantly, teach me to simply be present with my friend,

And to walk alongside them in their grief,

So that no matter how hard the journey may be for them,

They would be reminded that you are always with them,

Through the comfort and love of a faithful friend.
