What is the righteousness of God?

God’s justice (or just) and righteousness are both stems of his holiness. Holiness is defined as being set apart. God is set apart and is the standard by whom all things are measured, i.e., it’s a position. The greatest display of God’s righteousness is his Son, Jesus Christ (1 John 2:1).

Can we have the same righteousness of God?

From the onset I could see how people would answer no. But the truth of the matter is we can have the same righteousness of God. This can be explained theologically and by the Scriptures.

From a theological perspective, God’s righteousness and justice will not allow him to tolerate sin. It is said God turns his face from sin. Remember when Jesus was in Gethsemane and asked the Father to remove the cup? (Matthew 26:39) Many believe the cup was the cross but I beg to differ. Jesus knew He was going to face the cross. He even predicted it (John 2:19) and faced it with great joy (Hebrews 12:2). The cup was the separation (even for a millisecond) from the Father. In other words, God the Father turned his back on God the Son. “My God. My God. Why have you forsaken me?” This answer is, Jesus took all our sins on himself and the Father cannot stand (tolerate) to look at sin. The resurrection proves the Father validated the Son’s sacrifice. The only reason God can even look at us or even pays attention to our prayers is because he does not see or hear us but he sees and hears his Son, “Christ in you the hope of glory.”

From a Scripture perspective, I think these two verses (an there are others) confirm it without a doubt:

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NAS)

“And may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes on the basis of faith.” Philippians 3:9 (NAS)

We may not always act righteously, but if you have transferred trust in yourself to Jesus Christ, you have positional righteous, the same that God has.
